Instagram will discontinue end-to-end encrypted messaging after May 8, 2026, which will affect Direct Chat users worldwide.

Users with affected conversations will see notifications within Instagram, informing them that encrypted chats and related features are ending soon.

After the deadline, existing encrypted chats will no longer function as end-to-end protected spaces for messages, calls, and media sharing.

Instagram says users should review important encrypted conversations early, because access and protection settings may change permanently after May 2026.

If necessary—and for backup purposes—users can download data from end-to-end encrypted messages in advance by using Instagram download tools before support ends.

Features related to encrypted chats—including specific PIN-based recovery options—are being phased out by Instagram starting after May 2026.

Subsequently, to avoid losing easy access online, it is advisable for users to save any important information, photos, or documents from encrypted chats right now.

This change does not mean that Instagram messaging will disappear; however, it does mean that this specific additional layer of privacy will be completely removed.

Anyone who relies on encrypted chats for sensitive personal discussions should switch to alternative secure messaging options before Instagram's deadline expires soon.

The single most important piece of advice for users is this: check your notifications, back up important chat information, and start preparing now for the changes coming in May.
